Fine Spencer M-1865 Repeating Rifle, Post-War Alteration by Springfield Armory. Features 32" round barrel on full length walnut stock secured by two barrel bands, military ladder rear sight with post front sight, 7 shot tube fed magazine & sling swivels. This is 1 of only 1,215 rifles that were altered by Springfield Armory from 1867-1874. These rifles were altered to .50 caliber Rimfire with 3-groove rifling, fitted with stabler cut-off device allowing single shot only; & also fitted them with a cleaning rod. Crisp markings throughout with receiver bridge stamped “Model 1865” alongside Spencer address & patent date with visible military inspectors cartouche on left side of stock behind saddle ring plate & matching serial number stamped on barrel at receiver. Saddle ring has been plugged. Metal shows a pleasing patina throughout with traces of original finish. Stock is very good showing typical scattered use marks with no cracks. Mechanically sound with crisp action & strong rifled bore. A scarce, U.S. issue, Springfield altered Civil War Spencer rifle in far above average condition.
