Here is an excellent condition, PEABODY rifle manufactured by PROVIDENCE TOOL CO, in Providence RI, under the 1862 PEABODY patent. This model is known as the 1870 SPANISH MODEL and is chambered in 43 SPANISH caliber. Also, with regard to this specific rifle, two proof marks, one stamped on top of barrel breech & again on top of receiver, the "Crown over V" (consisting of a V topped by a "Charlemagne" crown with rectanguloid panels with arched tops) is a German proof mark showing a weapon in storage at the time of the German adoption of its Proof Act, in 1891. The presence of this German mark on this Peabody suggests that it was one of those sent to France for the Franco-Prussian War, and that it subsequently was captured, surrendered, or confiscated by the victorious Prussian forces. This rifle is in excellent condition with smoky case hardening colors on the receiver, lock, hammer, lever and breech block. The wood is excellent showing no cracks or damage and a nice sharp cartouche. The bore is bright and shiny with strong sharp rifling, only one small spot of light roughness that will probably scrub out. The sights are correct and original as is the cleaning rod. All screw heads are clean and are not chewed up. The barrel is nice, no rust and has a nice smooth blue/patina finish.
