Full Stock Ohio Percussion Long Rifle by Chillicothe, Ohio gunmaker E. SLERET(1815-1864), CA. 1850’s. .40 Caliber with 35” octagonal pinned barrel on full length stock, OAL 51”. Top of barrel flat shows gunmakers mark, “E. SLERET” in block letters. Floral Engraved Commercial trade lock marked, “GARDNER &/SCHUTTE. /CHILLICOTHE.OH”. Double set triggers with brass furniture throughout including crescent brass buttplate with faceted upper finial. Faceted brass triggerguard with rear finger-spur. Plain hickory ramrod secured with three brass ramrod pipes with brass nose cap. Raised cheekpiece with engraved brass inlay. Good condition overall with crisp markings. Stock very good showing typical scattered use marks with a very small chip at toe. Mechanically sound with triggers functioning properly. Bore is very good with deep strong rifling. Rifle is accompanied with paper clipping stating U.S. 1850 Census shows ENGLEHART SLERET as a gunsmith who operated a local gun shop in Chillicothe, OH until his death in 1864.
