Colt Model 1861 Special Musket Dated 1863 in .58 caliber with 40” barrel marked at breech “1863/ VP (Eagle’s Head)/ STEEL. Percussion lock with Eagle Motif stamped on bolster with “U.S. /COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./ HARTFORD CT.” marked forward of the hammer & “1863” on tail. Features two-leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards, iron furniture with sling swivels, steel nose cap & buttplate with “US” stamped on tang. Black walnut stock with two visible cartouches behind rear lock screw on left side. Colt produced these muskets under Ordnance Department contracts during the Civil War. It is estimated that roughly 100,000 Colt M 1861’s were produced between 1861-1865 with many being sold to state militias. Very good condition overall with crisp markings, metal surfaces showing a pleasing brown patina, replacement ramrod. Stock is very good showing typical scattered use marks. Mechanically sound with good bore.
